Pet Personalities: The Chewbacca
Chewing is a perfectly normal behavior for dogs of all ages. Both wild and domestic dogs spend hours chewing bones. This activity keeps their jaws strong and their teeth clean. While all dogs like a satisfying chew, the Chewbacca can be compulsive in his/her chewing. Does your dog sound like Chewbacca?
Here are some typical Chewbaccas:
Puppy Chewees — The desire to investigate interesting objects and the discomfort of teething motivate puppies to chew. Puppies go through a stage when they lose their baby teeth and experience pain as their adult teeth come in. This intensified chewing phase usually ends by six months of age. Gentle guidance can teach your puppy to restrict chewing to appropriate objects, like his own toys. Crating your young Chewie or confining to a small space when you’re away from home and providing toys are good ways to keep him occupied and safe. See below for some great ideas.
The Bored Chewbacca — We’ve said it many times, a tired dog is a happy dog. Exercise is vitally important for dogs prone to destructive chewing (say goodbye to your $750 Jimmy Choos [or is that Chews], your favourite Oakley or Rayban sunglasses, or remote controls. Exercise also produces endorphins, which have a calming effect. In fact, it is these endorphins that are stimulated by chewing, so if your dog is not getting enough exercise, he may unconsciously be seeking to replace needed endorphins by releasing pent-up energy through chewing. So get out there and wear off some of his excess energy with some of our selections below.
Separation Anxiety Chewers — Dogs who chew to relieve the stress of separation anxiety usually only chew when left alone or chew most intensely when left alone. One of our customers was fostering a dog that she did not know had separation anxiety and on the first day left alone, this poor fellow somehow Houdini-ed himself out of his locked metal kennel and chewed through pillows, window coverings, and door knobs in an effort not to left behind. We recommend getting professional help with this type of chewer as the behaviour will not likely go away without therapy and/or training.
