October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog month
The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) estimated in it’s most recent website report that there were 38,630 dogs admitted into dog shelters in Canada in 2014.
Of those admitted 38% were reclaimed by their owners, 47% were adopted to loving families, and 11% were euthanized.
Before we move on, we would like to point out that these shelters are doing an amazing job and public awareness and uptake of spay/neuter programs are working because in 1993, the figures told a very different story. In 1993 102,132 dogs were admitted into shelters, only 24% reclaimed, 39% adopted, and sadly, 30% of dogs were euthanized.
