Borderland Bone Broth

Borderland Natural Bone Broth for Pets

Borderland Bone Broth is a fairly new addition to our product line at Global Pet Foods NB. We chose this brand because of its high quality and the company’s experience in making bone broth (they began by producing a human broth line). In addition, Borderland is a female-owned and led Canadian company, which we think is super awesome!

Another reason we love Borderland is because of their social impact hiring strategy. The owner, Whitney, worked as a registered nurse, in addictions and mental health, before entering into entrepreneurship. She wanted to incorporate her previous work experience into her business. Borderland employs people with past drug or alcohol addictions, supporting them in their path of recovery.

Why feed bone broth?

Bone broth is made by slow cooking animal bones and connective tissue, for long periods of time. The result is a rich broth, full of amino acids, collagen, gelatin, glucosamine, electrolytes, calcium and other minerals and nutrients.

What are the health benefits of bone broth for pets?

Adding liquid to the diets of cats and dogs is always a good idea. Cats, especially, don’t drink enough water. Bone broth added to their food can really increase their hydration, while also providing lots of other health benefits. Cats that aren’t properly hydrated can be prone to urinary crystals and other ailments.

Bone broth has been a staple food of various cultures over time, and often includes veggies, herbs and salt, when prepared for humans. It has been noted to have incredible benefits, primarily for the gut. Bone broth can help strengthen the lining of the entire digestive system, fight food sensitivities, promote probiotics in the gut, and control inflammation.

Can you feed human bone broth to pets?

If you have human bone broth you want to feed your pet, make sure it has a very low salt content. Normally, the human varieties are full of salt to increase flavour. We have tried the Borderland pet broth, and only enjoy it once we have added salt and warmed it up. Whitney makes the bone broth for pets in the same kitchen as her human line- it is all human-grade!

You can also make your own bone broth. It’s not too hard, but it does take quite a bit of time and can make your house a little stinky. If you don’t mind, have the time and some nice scented candles, give it a try! Just be sure to use quality bones and don’t add much salt.

P.S. Borderlands bone broth can be found in the freezer section of our stores. Simply thaw in the package when you are ready to feed it to your pet. It will last 5 days or so in your fridge. You can also refreeze the portions you don’t use in ice cube trays, making it easy to serve small portions at a time. Bonus points if you have a bone-shaped ice cube tray! 🙂
